We can learn an awful lot of from the Old Masters. We can admire their techniques, the mastery over their subjects and mediums, their faiths, integrity and humanity.
Countless generations of artists have tried to emulate them and I think that there is still a place in a painter’s self-education of doing a few Old Master copies. My own approach was always a respectful tribute to their mastery and having a bit of fun at the same time. I never considered my re-mastered Old Master paintings as commercial propositions but had the pleasant surprise of selling a few of them.
I would like to think that Rembrandt had a sense of humour and sharing a glass of beer with him would have been a great experience.
